Project budget and project budget cost management methods

A project budget is the total amount of money planned and allocated to carry out a project over a specific period (term). Project budgets are based on initial project cost estimates and often depend on the effectiveness of project cost control - project cost control techniques to ensure you cover all project costs, including equipment, work hours, materials, and direct costs, while staying within budget.

There are four main methods of project budget management:

  • Incremental – track time on your tasks on a project and get a sense of the actual time you'll need to complete said tasks in the future.
  • Based on activity – calculate your ideal revenue, consider how many projects and prices you need to make during the year to achieve said revenue, and determine the budget of each individual project.
  • Value proposition – Add items to your budget based on the value they bring to your project.
  • Based on zero – This budget management technique is similar to the value proposition. The difference is that the category has to make sense and prove useful for each new stage of business, not just for one project.
